How to Write a Professional Summary (20+ Examples)

The professional summary is 2 to 4 sentences that sit at the top of your resume. If they're strong, the recruiter keeps reading. If they're weak, generic, or missing, the recruiter moves to the next candidate. Here's how to write one that hooks them, with real examples for 20+ career situations.

What is a professional summary?

A professional summary (sometimes called a resume summary, career summary, or profile statement) is a short paragraph that answers three questions:

  1. Who are you, professionally? (your job title + years of experience)
  2. What are you good at? (your top 2–3 skills or specializations)
  3. What have you done or what do you bring? (a measurable achievement or unique strength)

It goes right below your name and contact info, and it's the first real content the reader sees. Recruiters spend about 6–8 seconds on their first scan of a resume. Your summary is what they read during those seconds. Make it count.

Summary vs. Objective: which should you use?

If you're seeing advice that says "use an Objective statement," ignore it. Objectives are outdated. Objectives focus on what you want. Summaries focus on what you bring. Hiring managers care about what you bring. Use a summary.

Objective (outdated): "Seeking a challenging role in a dynamic company where I can leverage my skills and grow professionally."

Summary (modern): "Marketing Manager with 6 years of experience growing e-commerce brands from $500k to $4M+ in annual revenue through SEO, paid social, and email."

The formula that works

Here's the formula for a great summary:

[Title + Years] + [Top skills] + [Specific result or specialization] + [Target role]

Mix and match these components. Not all summaries need all four. The stronger your specific result, the less you need the other components.

Common summary mistakes

  1. Opening with "I am." Just write the title. "Marketing Manager with 6 years..." not "I am a Marketing Manager with 6 years..."
  2. Using buzzwords. "Results-driven, passionate, dynamic, hard-working, team player, motivated self-starter." Every resume has these words. They mean nothing. Cut them.
  3. Being vague. "Significant experience in multiple areas" ← not a summary. "8 years in B2B SaaS marketing, focused on paid acquisition and lifecycle email" ← that's a summary.
  4. Making it about you. "Seeking opportunities to grow" ← nobody cares. Recruiters care about what you bring them.
  5. Listing everything. The summary isn't a mini resume. Pick the 2–3 most relevant points and save the rest for the experience section.

Write your summary last

The easiest way to write a summary is to write the rest of your resume first. Once you've listed your experience, skills, and achievements, patterns emerge — and your strongest two or three points become obvious. Write the summary from your resume, not before it.
