Combination Resume

A hybrid format that leads with skills but still lists jobs chronologically.

A combination resume (also called a hybrid resume) merges the structure of a chronological resume with the skill-focus of a functional resume. It starts with an expanded skills section at the top, grouped into categories, then follows with a traditional reverse-chronological work experience section.

This format is useful when you're changing careers and want to lead with transferable skills, or when your technical skills deserve prominent placement. Unlike a pure functional resume, it doesn't hide your employment history — which means it doesn't trigger the "what is this person hiding?" reflex that recruiters have with pure functional resumes.

Example: A teacher transitioning to UX design might lead with a "Design Skills" section (Figma, user research, prototyping) before the "Experience" section, so recruiters see the relevant capability first.
