An ATS is software companies use to filter resumes before a human reads them.

An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a software platform that employers use to collect, sort, and rank job applications. When you submit a resume through an online job portal, it rarely goes directly to a recruiter — it's parsed by an ATS that extracts your contact info, work history, and skills into structured data, then scores your resume against the job description.

Roughly 75% of resumes are filtered out by ATS before a human reviewer ever opens them. Common ATS platforms include Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, and iCIMS. Each has slightly different parsing rules, but they all struggle with non-standard formatting — tables, two-column layouts, images, headers/footers, and fancy fonts. An ATS-friendly resume uses clean single-column formatting, standard section headings, and keywords from the job description.
